Vol. 236 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of Royal Canal.

7.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that the portion of the Royal Canal between Newcomen Bridge and Binn's Bridge, Dublin is in a filthy and stagnant condition; and that it constitutes a health hazard; and if he will take steps to have it cleaned and properly maintained.

I am informed by CIE that an excavator which has been engaged in cleaning the Royal Canal is working in the section between Newcomen Bridge and Binn's Bridge since 2nd July, 1968. The main task is the removal of rubbish dumped into the canal by members of the public. Because of dumping the canal sometimes becomes unsightly but CIE state that it is not a health hazard.
