Vol. 236 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Traffic Wardens' Remuneration.

28.

asked the Minister for Justice the rates of remuneration paid to traffic wardens; and the extent to which pensions paid to former members of the Garda Síochána may be reduced by receipt of such income.

Traffic wardens are employed for four hours during peak traffic periods on five days in each week. They are paid £8 for this part-time employment. Their remuneration does not cause any reduction in pensions of which they are in receipt as retired members of the Garda Síochána.

Can the Minister say what time these wardens come on duty?

Four hours.

No, at what time do they come on duty in the morning?

The Deputy did not ask me that. It may be at different times. I have not got that information.

I wonder would the Minister ensure that they come on duty before illegal parking has taken place. On the available evidence so far, they come on duty after most of the illegal parking has taken place. Their main purpose is to collect revenue and not prevent obstruction.

I have not got the information to state the exact time they come on duty or whether they have different hours in different sections.

Would the Minister consider advising them to confine their activities to cars and leave scooters out of it?

I do not think they have any special instructions about that.

That is what they are doing.
