63.

asked the Minister for Education the number of students upon whom the Higher Diploma in Education was conferred in each of the academic years 1965-66, 1966-67 and 1967-68.

The figures requested by the Deputy are as follows:

1965/66

686

1966/67

897

1967/68

1,061

64.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that a large number of schools give no remuneration whatever to students for the Higher Diploma in Education in respect of the teaching they do in those schools; and, if so, what plans he has to remedy this situation.

The Higher Diploma in Education or its equivalent is an additional academic qualification which the holder of a university degree needs in order to qualify for registration as a secondary teacher. Teaching under the supervision of the faculty of education of the university is an essential part of the Higher Diploma course. The question of the remuneration of diploma students serving in secondary schools is one for arrangement between the students and the schools, which are privately managed institutions. It is not a matter in which I can intervene.
