Vol. 236 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Children's Allowances.

84.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether the introduction of a means test for children's allowances is under consideration; and, if so, if he will furnish details.

As indicated in my reply to Deputy Michael O'Leary on the 20th June last, the whole scheme of children's allowances is under examination. This examination covers all aspects of the scheme. It is not possible to say, at this stage, what the outcome will be.

85.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of children's allowance payment orders cashed annually; and the number annually returned for redating because of non-presentation within the set time.

The number of children's allowance orders cashed annually is in the region of 5,130,000, and it is estimated that 22,000 orders are returned annually for redating because of non-presentation within the period of currency.

It is a tiny percentage of more than 5 million.
