asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will consider requesting CIE to examine the existing rail passenger services in Dublin to ascertain if these services could be used to a greater extent by commuters in order to help reduce the traffic density on the city roads.

As indicated in my reply to a previous question regarding Dublin suburban railways on 24th October, 1968, CIE are fully conscious of the need to ensure that the suburban rail services are utilised as effectively as possible with a view to making the maximum contribution to the relief of road congestion in Dublin city.

I have been informed by the Board that two market research surveys were carried out earlier this year to ascertain the requirements of existing and potential rail commuter travellers in Dublin. These surveys disclosed that in general the existing pattern of rail services is satisfactory except that there appeared to be a demand for more through services on the northern line to Tara Street and Pearse Stations. At present, this is precluded by track and signalling limitations but a scheme to overcome these limitations will commence early in 1969. It is planned to introduce a revised time table in June, 1969, with more northern trains running through to Tara Street and Pearse Stations.

As indicated in my reply on 24th October, 1968, additional services during the morning and evening rush hours have recently been introduced between Connolly Station and Dalkey and it is proposed to open a new station at Kilbarrack next year. In addition, almost all suburban stations have been renovated or are in course of renovation.

CIE have informed me that suitability of the services is kept under continuous review and further action will be taken as required.

May we assume that the survey to be made now will be longer sighted than that made prior to the closing down of Harcourt Street Station and the lines supplying the suburban area of Dundrum and so on whose motoring population is now assisting to clog the streets of Dublin?

As I have said, two further market research surveys were carried out. Thousands of people have been interviewed.

What in the name of Providence is the point of employing market surveyors if you employ them after you have torn up the rails and torn down the bridges over which a most valuable artery of suburban traffic was passing?

I am not convinced that the service would ever have been a useful proposition.
