Vol. 237 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Schools.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance if plans are prepared and a grant sanctioned for the erection of new primary schools in the parish of Corofin, County Galway; and, if so, when he expects the contract to be placed and the building commenced.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has any plans for the erection of a new school at Corofin, County Galway; and if he is aware of the condition of the old school there.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 6 and 7 together.

I am aware that a new school is urgently required at Corofin. The preparation of plans is in hands but there has been delay in getting information from the county council regarding the water supply. As soon as this has been cleared the plans will be completed, bills of quantities prepared and tenders invited. At this stage I cannot say precisely when building work can be commenced but I can assure the Deputies that there will be no delay on our part.

Arising from the Deputy's reply, will the Deputy say if the county council——

The Parliamentary Secretary, if you please.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary say if the county council fail to get a supply—it is the Galway County Council that is involved, of which Deputy Donnellan and myself are members, although it is his area really—will he ask the Board of Works to provide an alternative supply? There is a strike on there at the moment. I have made repeated representations about this matter over the last two years. I have sent the Minister a cutting from the Herald, Tuam, with a photograph of the children on strike and a letter also from the reverend manager. This water supply is very urgently needed.

The question of a water supply for this school will be dealt with as a matter of urgency.
