Vol. 237 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ryan's Tourist Holdings.

41.

andMr. L. Belton asked the Minister for Transport and Power if a representative of Aer Lingus was appointed to the board of Ryan's Tourist Holdings; if so, his name, and when he was appointed.

I am informed by the Board of Aerlínte Éireann Teoranta that Mr. Michael Dargan, General Manager of the Company, was coopted as a member of the Board of Ryan's Tourist Holdings Ltd. on 2nd December, 1968 on the nomination of the Board of Aerlínte. Mr. Dargan is also the nominee of Aerlínte Éireann Teoranta on the board of directors of Irish and Intercontinental Hotels Limited since 5th January, 1968. He is, in fact, Chairman of the Board of that company.

Will he collect any director's fees?

I have no idea in regard to director's fees.

The Minister says Mr. Dargan is chairman of the second company to which he referred. Is he chairman of the first company also?

That is a separate question.

I do not think so, a Cheann Comhairle. The Minister purported to give the character of the representation of both Aer Lingus and Aerlínte on the boards of the two companies, which he named, and he mentioned that, in respect of the second company named, Mr. Dargan is the chairman.

He is only a director of Ryan's. The question of who is the chairman does not arise on this question at all.

The Minister is ashamed to give the information.

I am asking who is the chairman.

This is a private company and that does not arise.

The Minister is ashamed.

The Minister has just told us this gentleman is a director. Who is the chairman?

There is no need for me to state who the chairman is.

Is the Minister ashamed to give the information?

Is the Deputy making any suggestion?

No. I am just asking a simple question. Who is the chairman? I should like a simple answer.

I do not see why the Deputy should ask. He knows very well. He is simply making a point.

(Cavan): The Minister must be embarrassed.

He is ashamed.
