The latest relevant information is that collected at the Census of Population, 1966. The total number of persons at work in industry in 1966 was 293,733. Of these, 16,833 were self-employed, 1,192 were assisting relatives and 275,708 were employees. Industry is taken as comprising mining, quarrying and turf production, manufacturing, building and construction and electricity, gas and water supply.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give details of (1) the numbers of people in industrial employment in the age groups (a) 16 to 18 years, (b) 18 to 50 years and (c) over 50 and (2) the numbers in each group who are skilled, semi-skilled or unskilled.
The only comprehensive particulars available of ages of persons at work in industry are those derived from the censuses of population, in which the age grouping used does not correspond exactly with that required by the Deputy. The numbers recorded at the Census of Population, 1966, were as follows:

Industry is taken as comprising mining, quarrying and turf production, manufacturing, building and construction and electricity, gas and water supply.
It has not been possible, in the time available, to compile figures for persons who are skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled in industry. These figures are at present being extracted and will be furnished direct to the Deputy as soon as possible. A cross-classification of persons in industry by age group and level of skill is not available.
