Vol. 237 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Sligo Spring Well.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that, following drainage of the River Moy, a spring well at Curroughboy, Tourlestrane, County Sligo is no longer able to supply five families who normally used it; if he will accept responsibility in this matter; and if he will make a contribution towards a group scheme for the families affected.

The Commissioners of Public Works are advised that they have no legal liability in regard to the behaviour of spring wells fed from underground sources. The extent to which this well may have been affected by the drainage works is very doubtful but as a gesture of goodwill the Commissioners in March last offered the landowner £15 towards the cost of any remedial measures he might wish to take. He has neither accepted nor rejected the offer. Applications for grants towards group schemes are considered by the Department of Local Government.

What was the spring well doing that it should not have been doing?

I do not understand the Deputy's question.

I was wondering about the reference to the behaviour of spring wells.

As I mentioned in my reply, the Commissioners of Public Works do not accept any overall responsibility for the peculiarities of spring wells.
