Vol. 237 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - System Built Flats.

48.

asked the Minister for Local Government what plans there are for building more high-rise system built flats; and where they will be located.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his question of 27th November, 1968, in regard to Dublin Corporation's plans for multistorey system built flats. No proposals for such flats have been received from any other housing authority.

49.

asked the Minister for Local Government the cost of each type of flat in the system built multi-storey buildings in Dublin.

I take it that the question relates to the Ballymun Housing Project. I explained to the Deputy in reply to his question of 12th May, 1966, the reasons why there would be no validity in apportioning the contract target price, as authorised by the Corporation, over the number of dwellings then being provided within a four-year contract. In July of this year, the Corporation authorised the construction of 192 additional flats within the contract, which had included the substantial cost of building and equipping the concrete prefabrication factory. The Corporation also decided to undertake a central city scheme using the same building methods and availing of the facilities of the Ballymun factory. The Deputy will appreciate in these circumstances that, while one may make a crude calculation of dividing the contract target price by the number of dwellings being provided at Ballymun, the existence of other factors will ultimately be reflected in the true building costs. I might say, at this stage, however, that I am satisfied that the costs of the flats at Ballymun are lower than the costs of corresponding flats provided by traditional methods.
