Vol. 237 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Bus Warning Lights.

64.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will introduce a regulation providing that, whenever a school bus stops to load or unload, it will flash red or other warning lights and that upon such flashing traffic from any direction must halt until the children are safely across the road and the bus has moved away to leave a clear view.

Whether to prescribe a special warning device for fitting to school buses and, if so, what device to prescribe, are difficult questions. My Department is at present examining the possibility of prescribing the fitting of a warning sign to control traffic while the bus is stopped for the purpose of loading or unloading passengers. I am advised that the use of flashing lights may not be the best way to deal with this problem.

Is the Minister aware that this is the regulation in the State of Washington?

Well, I will take the Deputy's word for it.

I can assure the Minister it is. I have seen it in operation.
