Vol. 237 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Garda Patrols.

90.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of Garda patrol cars in Dublin city; and if he considers this number adequate to meet the needs of the city.

The number of cars engaged on patrol work in the Dublin Metropolitan Area is 23, and provision has been made in next year's estimates for an additional four. There are also a sizeable number of cars at the disposal of the Detective Branch, as to which it is not considered to be in the public interest to give any details.

The Garda authorities are satisfied that the transport provisions for the Dublin Metropolitan Area are adequate

91.

asked the Minister for Justice whether any increase in patrol gardaí will be called for on the introduction of the breathaliser test; and whether any plain clothes gardaí will be used in the work.

I have been informed by the Commissioner that he is not in a position to say, at this stage, in what manner the strength and working arrangements of the force will be affected by the introduction of the breath-test under Part V of the Road Traffic Act, 1968.
