Vol. 238 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Report on Revival of Irish.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has commissioned a New York research specialist to supply a report relating to the revival of Irish; and if he will give details of this, stating the cost of the report, its conclusions and whether it will be published.

I commissioned the Institute for Motivational Research, New York, to make a study relating to the wider use of the Irish language in the everyday life of the people, at a cost of £7,242. As the study was for the benefit of myself and the officers of my Department to assist us in our task of carrying out the aims and objects of the White Paper on the Restoratiton of the Irish language, it was not the intention that it should be published.

I did not hear the Minister's reply. Would he mind repeating it?

I commissioned the Institute for Motivational Research, New York, to make a study relating to the wider use of the Irish language in the everyday life of the people. The report was for our own information. It was not our intention that it should be published generally. However, I am certainly prepared to make it available to anyone with a special interest, like the Irish language organisations or academic institutions.

The reason I put down the question is that it seems from some press reports it has become available to people outside Dáil Éireann.

It has not been made officially available, but I am prepared to make it available, as I said, to interested persons, academic or language organisations and so on.
