Vol. 238 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Higher Education in Limerick.

66.

asked the Minister for Education if he will define his term third-level institution used with reference to the question of a university for Limerick; and if he will make a concrete and binding statement on the issue of higher education in Limerick stating the nature, scope, extent, location, cost and date of completion of any institute proposed.

Third-level education includes university education and education of similar standing. The Higher Education Authority is at present preparing recommendations to me concerning (1) the nature and form of the third-level institution to be established in Limerick, (2) the courses to be provided therein and (3) the qualifications to which these courses will lead. Pending the receipt of the recommendations of the Authority I am not in a position to give further information save that, as already announced, the Government has made £1.5 million capital available for the project.

Is the Minister in a position to say when these will be completed?

Again, inside the next few months. They are working very hard at the moment.
