Vol. 238 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cahirciveen (Kerry) Office Cleaner.

13.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why a person (name supplied) has been relieved of her post as office cleaner at the Cahirciveen post office, County Kerry in view of the fact that she was employed as cleaner in a temporary capacity for three months.

The post in question became vacant on 2nd December, 1968, when the former occupant, who had been ill for some time, resigned. Nominations for the vacancy were sought in the usual way from the local employment exchange, and the best qualified candidate was appointed. The person filling the post temporarily, whose services had to be terminated, had no special claim to the post.

What special claim had the person appointed?

Membership of the local Fianna Fáil Cumann.

He was the best qualified candidate.

From what point of view?

Applications were sought and he was the most suitable candidate.

It was a fiddle. The domestic circumstances of the person who was sacked were far worse than those of the person who was appointed.

Nobody was sacked. Somebody was in temporary employment and, in a case like that, applications are sought and the most suitable candidate is selected.

Tell us the difference between the two candidates?

One was a political violinist and the other was not.

The domestic circumstances of the person appointed were far better than those of the person who went on the job for two or three months. In all the circumstances, does the Parliamentary Secretary think the best appointment was made?

Then God forgive you.
