Vol. 238 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rate Burden.

64.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has received any delegations from organisations of residents on the present rates burden; and whether he will take account in the coming Budget of the present economic hardship involved for householders in the present rating system.

I have not received any delegations about this matter.

The Exchequer makes substantial contributions to the finances of local authorities which greatly reduce the amounts that would otherwise have to be raised under the rating system. I would remind the Deputy that Schedule A income tax will be abolished with effect from the year 1969-70. Householders will be the principal beneficiaries from this relief.

If so requested, would the Minister receive any delegations on this rates problem?

I think a delegation on rates would be more appropriately received by the Minister for Local Government, in the first instance at any rate. He is a very——

Affable sort of fellow.

Gentle creature.
