Vol. 238 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Direct Labour Housing Scheme (Wexford).

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in order to provide for continuity of employment in Wexford Corporation's direct labour scheme, to prevent further redundancy and to ensure that houses will be provided as quickly as possible, he will now give approval to commencement of direct labour housing schemes at Thomas Clarke Street, Wexford, and Johns Gate Street, Wexford.

I have approved the Corporation's proposals for the scheme at Thomas Clarke Place. I have not yet received their revised proposals for the other scheme.

Could the Minister say when the Johns Gate Street and the Thomas Clarke Street schemes were approved? Could he say what difficulties there will be with regard to the Johns Gate Street scheme? Thirdly, is he in a position to indicate to the Wexford Corporation whether or not there will be facilities from the Local Loans Fund with regard to those two schemes?

In so far as the Thomas Clarke Street scheme is concerned this scheme was forwarded for the Department's approval on 17th February. The proposals were then looked at and investigated by the housing inspector towards the end of February and on the 28th of the month they were approved.

Could the Minister say anything about the Local Loans Fund?

I can only say what was my experience in normal circumstances. When approval is issued in this form there is always provision for it.

Does the Minister see any difficulty in the Johns Gate Street scheme?

I cannot see any but I will pass the Deputy's query on to the Minister.
