Vol. 239 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - ESB Charges.

39.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the grave increase in ESB charges in the Dublin area; whether he was consulted by the ESB in this move which substantially increases the cost of living; and, if so, the date upon which he sanctioned it.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the price increases announced by the ESB on 30th September, 1968.

I was notified in advance by the ESB of their proposal to make these increases which were calculated to give them an additional 7 per cent on their revenue. This additional revenue was required to meet wage increases, additional costs of fuel oil and other cost increases. The Government agreed to the proposal prior to the ESB announcement of 30th September, 1968.

Has the Minister considered the cost of production in other industries as a result of the increase in ESB charges, and will he allow price increases in the products of these industries as a result?

They have been allowed.

They will be asked for very quickly.

There has been no evidence——
