Vol. 239 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Capital Expenditure on Racecourses.

48.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the importance of the bloodstock and racing industry and the employment provided therein and the continued rise in expenses associated with the industry, he will consider in conjunction with the Racing Board the possibility of increasing stakes and assisting racecourse executives in respect of capital expenditure proposed at racecourses.

The Racing Board's contribution towards stakes has been increased substantially with effect from 1st March last.

The board is not, I understand, at present in a position to assist racecourse executives in regard to capital expenditure.

In view of the need for capital expenditure on a number of racecourses with a view to attracting attendances, has the Minister considered the feasibility of assisting capital development projects as distinct from stakes?

I certainly think that the board, if it had resources available to it, would be very keen to improve facilities because facilities at a large number of racecourses are, I suppose, inadequate by modern standards. I shall bring the matter to the attention of the board.

Perhaps, the Minister would discuss it with them.
