Vol. 239 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage Schemes.

55.

asked the Minister for Finance if the survey has been completed in connection with the proposed drainage of the River Lee, Tralee; and, if so, when work is likely to commence on the scheme.

As previously explained, a study of river flows and tidal conditions over a long period is necessary before a scheme can be designed. This study will take at least a further two years. It is not possible at this stage to say when work on a drainage scheme might commence.

56.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that a deputation has appeared before a meeting of the Kerry County Council twice during the past few weeks protesting very strongly on account of the flooding of holdings caused by defects in the Akeragh drainage scheme; and, if so, if he will now consider having this scheme examined by an inspector from his Department with a view to carrying out some work immediately to remove the cause of this repeated flooding which is causing severe hardship to the landowners of the district.

The maintenance of the Akeragh Lough drainage district is a statutory responsibility of the Kerry County Council. The Commissioners of Public Works could undertake works only by way of a comprehensive drainage scheme under the 1945 Act. Because of present commitments this catchment will not be reached in the drainage programme for many years.

57.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the serious damage caused by flooding of a river in the Rathreedaune, Carnaglough area at Bonniconlon, Ballina, County Mayo; and if he is prepared to have this work undertaken under the Moy drainage scheme.

An engineering investigation of this river is being made to find out whether an extension of the Moy Drainage Scheme to include it would be justified.
