76.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total amount of life insurance premiums collected in Ireland by Irish companies in each of the past ten years; and the proportion of the accumulated funds invested in this country in each of these years.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 75 and 76 together.

Particulars of the annual life assurance premiums collected in Ireland by Irish and non-Irish companies may be obtained from the Summary of Statements of Assurance Business published annually by my Department, copies of which are in the Library. The figures for 1968 are not yet available.

Statistics regarding investment in Ireland by Irish and non-Irish companies of their outstanding liabilities to Irish policy holders are not required by statute to be furnished to me by the companies. It may be taken, however, that the Irish companies invest by far the greater part of their funds in Ireland and that the proportion of the total funds of the non-Irish companies covering their liabilities to Irish policy holders which is invested in Ireland is close to two-thirds.
