Vol. 239 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free Supply of Special Foods.

40.

andMr. L. Belton asked the Minister for Health if he will introduce legislation enabling him to supply free of charge the special foods needed for children suffering from phenylketonuria, in view of the heavy costs imposed on parents of these children.

As part of the general arrangements for assisting "hardship" cases in obtaining essential drugs, medicines, etc., health authorities supply these foods free of charge, or at very reasonable cost, to any parent of a child suffering from phenylketonuria who applies.

While it has not yet been decided whether specific legislative provision on the lines suggested will be made, I can assure the Deputies that, at least, the present position as I have set it out will be maintained.
