Vol. 239 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Safety.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that some motorists overtake at inadequate speeds, thus creating dangers for themselves and for approaching traffic, because they are under the impression that the speed limit may not be exceeded in the operation of overtaking; whether this impression is correct; and whether in the interests of road safety he will make a statement on the matter.

There is no exemption from speed limits in respect of the manoeuvre of overtaking, which should not be attempted unless it can be done without danger or inconvenience to others. The "Rules of the Road" contain excellent advice on overtaking, and I would recommend drivers to refresh their knowledge of these Rules from time to time.
