Vol. 239 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State of the Economy.

44.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the recent statement made by him on television and radio that the economy was in a bad state has caused serious anxiety all over the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The purpose of my statement was to outline the consequences which a general increase in costs and incomes of the size involved in the maintenance settlement would entail. These consequences should be a source of anxiety for us all. The crisis can, as I indicated, be avoided and a steady improvement achieved in pay and working conditions, provided these take place in an orderly way inside the guidelines of overall growth.

Does the Minister not appreciate that his statements have caused many people who had savings in post offices and elsewhere to withdraw them in a hurry because of panic?

I am not so aware.

Is the Minister not aware that it was the Government who got us into this rut today and what are they going to do about it?

That is a separate question.
