Vol. 239 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Status of An Taisce.

56.

asked the Minister for Finance why statutory recognition on the lines of that given in Britain to the National Trust has not been given in this country to An Taisce.

Since the enactment of the British National Trust Act, 1907, which was sponsored as a Private Members' Bill, the position of companies has been greatly strengthened by a series of Acts which have been consolidated in the Companies Act, 1963. An Taisce as a company incorporated under this Act has, under its memorandum of association, very extensive powers in relation to the acquisition, preservation and management of property. These powers can, if necessary, be extended by appropriate amendments of the memorandum of association. There is no apparent necessity, therefore, for special legislation in relation to An Taisce.
