Vol. 239 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Onion Powder Imports.

6.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that onion powder is being imported from abroad for the manufacture of potato crisps; if these imports are duty free; and if he will take steps to assist the manufacture of onion powder in this country and thus avoid unnecessary imports.

I am aware that imported dried onion powder is used as a flavouring ingredient in potato crisps. The material is not liable to customs duty on importation. The possibility of manufacturing onion powder in the country has been under consideration by one of the food processing firms but certain technical and commercial difficulties have been encountered. I am, of course, in favour of encouraging the home manufacture of such powder if it can be shown to be a practicable proposition.
