Vol. 239 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Forestry Land.

81.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that there is a considerable area of land in County Mayo which is only suitable for forestry purposes; and if he is prepared to take the necessary steps to purchase such land and have it planted, thereby creating much-needed employment for the workers.

In County Mayo as elsewhere in the country every effort is being made to acquire additional land for afforestation. As I have said more than once in the House, I would appreciate it if Deputies would make known to the forestry division any land in their constituencies which could be obtained for forestry purposes.

82.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission are interested in acquiring portion of the estate of Mr. Jack McGloin at Greyfoot, Attymass, Ballina, County Mayo, for the purpose of establishing a forest nursery there.

There are no proceedings for the acquisition of this 114-acre property but enquiries are at present being made by the Land Commission with a view to ascertaining the suitability of the lands for land settlement purposes. In the event of the property coming into possession of the Land Commission, the requirements of the forestry division will be fully considered.
