Vol. 239 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Incomes and Income Tax.

45.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in real terms for 5th April, 1969 what would be the gross equivalents, i.e. as returned for income tax purposes, of incomes accruing in the income tax year ended 5th April, 1932 of the following amounts (a) £2,500 per annum of which £360 was free of income tax and sur-tax and (b) £1,700 per annum of which £360 was free of income tax and sur-tax.

Sums of £2,500, £1,700 and £360, for the year ended 5th April, 1932, would be equivalent to £10,129, £6,888 and £1,459 respectively, for the year ended 5th April, 1969, by reference to the consumer price index figures averaged for those years.

46.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in real terms in the case of a married person with no dependent children what would be the net equivalents, i.e. after the deduction of income tax and sur-tax, at 5th April, 1969 of incomes accruing in the income tax year ended 5th April, 1932, of the following amounts (a) £2,500 per annum of which £360 was free of income tax and sur-tax and (b) £1,700 per annum of which £360 was free of income tax and sur-tax.

Gross incomes of £2,500 and £1,700 (£360 of which in each case was not chargeable to tax) in the case of a married man with no dependent children, would, for the year ended 5th April, 1932, have amounted to £2,200 and £1,548 after payment of tax assuming that the incomes were earned income.

By reference to the averaged consumer price index figures for the years ended 5th April, 1932 and 5th April, 1969, the equivalent of those figures for the year ended 5th April, 1969, would be £8,913 and £6,272 respectively.

Could the Minister indicate to me, or has he an opinion on the question, why Deputy MacEntee should desire to find time by question publicly to affront the Taoiseach and to trap Deputy Des Foley into being the instrument of that affront, by his absence?

That does not arise.

It is a very indecent performance for an ex-Minister.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
