Vol. 239 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Re-employment of Widows in Civil Service.

13.

asked the Minister for Finance why female civil servants who get married, leave the service, have families, and whose husbands die, are re-employed in the service only at a salary rate applicable to single persons; and whether, as such widows have now to support children, he will have them paid the rates applicable to married persons.

Payment of higher salaries on marriage in the Civil Service applies only to men who are in grades remunerated on a marriage differentiated basis. In replacement of an earlier system under which all men were paid on the same footing, lower salaries are paid in these grades while they are unmarried. This arrangement makes possible the payment to them, on marriage, of higher salaries and, in addition, children's allowances. A claim for the payment of the appropriate married scale to reinstated widows who are serving in grades in which the scales are differentiated on a marriage basis is at present being dealt with under the scheme of conciliation and arbitration for the Civil Service.
