Vol. 239 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clonmel (Tipperary) Telephone Applications.

16.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of applicants awaiting the installation of telephones in the Clonmel area; the length of time they are waiting; the reason for the delay; and when the needs will be met.

There are 44 applicants awaiting telephones in Clonmel, two of whom are in the priority category and are being attended to, Twenty-eight of the applications were received in 1968, the earliest in June, and the remainder were received since 1st January, 1969. As I stated in reply to a somewhat similar question on 25th March, Clonmel exchange accommodation has been overcrowded and it was not considered advisable to add to the traffic load by connecting new subscribers, except those in the priority category. Extra switchboards are being installed at present in accommodation set free recently by moving the postal sorting office to other premises. It is expected that this work will be completed in about three months and waiting applicants will then be given service without further delay.
