Vol. 239 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salmon Fishing Season on Kerry Rivers.

21.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will extend the salmon fishing season in Cromane and the river Maine, Killorglin, County Kerry, for the month of August.

To enable me to decide whether it would be justifiable to alter the close season as suggested I would consider holding a public inquiry in the area, at which all interested parties could give evidence. If the fishermen concerned wish to make an application for an inquiry they should submit their case through the Board of Conservators and show how any proposed alteration would be in the interests of the fisheries.

I should add though that to meet the minimum requirements of the law any extension of the open season for net fishing in August would call for compensation by deferring the opening date for net fishing in January.

Has the Minister any proposal before his Department for a similar inquiry in regard to the Foyle fishery estuary in Donegal?

This question relates to Kerry.

The Minister has fallen down badly in his constituency. He dodged the meeting to which he was invited. He was sitting at a cumann meeting seven miles away. He was in the Lifford Hotel.

I do not accept Deputy Harte's invitations to meetings——

If the Minister calls for a public inquiry in relation to the Foyle fishery estuary we will see how he will come out of it.

In fact, it is into it that Deputy Harte might go.
