Vol. 240 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Taxation Reliefs.

59.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will increase the income tax personal allowance in the case of married women in employment.

Alterations in the personal allowances for income tax purposes is primarily a budgetary matter and the Deputy will realise that I cannot at this stage give an indication as to what the budget statement might or might not contain.

I hope the Minister will bear in mind that the particular problem covered in the question has, in fact, been raised on several occasions in recent years?

Yes, the Minister will bear all the circumstances in mind and take all the measures which seem to him to be appropriate.

The Minister will remember that he has said precisely that on many other occasions.

60.

asked the Minister for Finance if to encourage productivity he will exclude the first ten hours of overtime from the assessment of income tax.

The answer is in the negative.

61.

asked the Minister for Finance if in considering the Budget he will have regard to the fact that people engaged in business on a small scale are facing difficulty in remaining in business; and if he will consider granting such persons some relief in the taxation burden.

62.

asked the Minister for Finance if in framing this year's Budget he will take into account the fact that in many parts, particularly in Dublin, small business people are finding it difficult to continue in business; and if he will consider introducing some remedial measures.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take questions 61 and 62 together. Tax reductions for any given sector of the public are essentially budgetary matters and it would not be appropriate to comment on them at this stage.
