Vol. 240 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter Production Costs.

16.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the cost of (a) processing one lb of butter and (b) packaging one lb of butter from bulk.

A survey made by An Bord Bainne in connection with the Cook-Sprague Report, which was published last year, showed that the total cost to creameries of transporting, receiving and separating milk and of churning butter varied considerably in accordance with the size of the plant. A creamery manufacturing less than 100 tons of butter per annum incurred a cost to point of sale of 8.05 pence per lb while the cost was 4.02 pence per lb in a creamery with an output of 2,400 tons per annum.
