asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the person appointed as Commissioner to perform the duties formerly carried out by the elected members of Dublin City Council (a) the pension paid to him as a retired civil servant, (b) the date upon which he retired, (c) whether he has since the date of his retiral received any other moneys from public funds and (d) if so, why and what amounts.

The information requested by the Deputy is as follows: (a)—£2,475 p.a., (b)—1st October, 1966. (c) and (d)— The person appointed as Commissioner is in receipt of £200 a year with effect from 1st January, 1968, as Chairman of An Chomhairle Leabharlanna.
So that, added to the outrageous sum that the Minister for Local Government is giving to this official to do his dirty work——
He is doing the work that Deputy Ryan should be doing.
(Cavan): He is doing the Minister's dirty work.
The sum I have mentioned is the pension which this very fine public servant earned after a long life of service in the Department of Local Government, and I do not think it is right that Deputy Ryan should infer that he is not entitled to it.
What we are saying is that a person is now being paid for doing work which was voluntarily done by 45 people elected by the citizens.
