Vol. 240 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Speed Limit.

11.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider exempting from the 60 mph speed limit members of the medical profession who are answering emergency calls.

In providing for the exemption of certain classes of vehicles from the general speed limit recently introduced, I considered carefully the relevance of exemptions already provided for in built-up areas and special speed limit regulations, in local parking bye-laws and temporary rules, and in temporary rules relating to clearways. The intention generally is to confine exemptions to classes of vehicles which, apart from their association with emergency situations, are readily identifiable for the purpose of enforcement. In these circumstancese, I did not find it practicable to provide a general exemption for such categories as the medical profession.

Surely the Minister must agree that the exemption of doctors on call is a lot more justified than the exemption of Ministerial cars?
