asked the Minister for Local Government if it is his intention to assist Galway Corporation to defray the very considerable loan charges on its capital programme associated with the establishment of an industrial estate.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is the intention of the State to assist Galway Corporation to defray the very considerable loan charges on its capital programme associated with tourist development.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 23 and 24 together.

Generous contributions are already payable by my Department in respect of loan charges incurred by Galway Corporation and other local authorities in connection with important categories of capital works. In this connection the Deputy will be aware of the increased subsidy recently made available for local authority housing. The contributions to which I have referred are provided whether or not the works concerned are associated with the establishment of an industrial estate or with tourist development.

I may add that the industrial estate and tourist development will add considerably to the general prosperity of the Galway area.
