Vol. 240 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Convening of Dublin City Council.

17.

asked the Minister for Local Government the procedure for calling a meeting of the Dublin City Council; and whether a meeting of the council could have been convened subsequent to 25th April, 1969.

The law requires that a summons to attend a meeting of the Dublin City Council, signed by the town clerk, shall be sent to every member of the council at least three clear days before the intended meeting. The removal from office of the members of the city council with effect from 25th April, 1969, precludes the convening of meetings of the council after that date.

Is the Minister aware that a document was issued to the former Aldermen and Councillors of the Dublin City Council from the Labour Party Head Office last week inviting the recipients to participate in the rowdy scenes at the City Hall when they tried to impede the Commissioner from carrying out his duty to strike the rate necessary for the provision of the pay increases to the trade unionists who were entitled to them and in an effort to deprive the citizens of the city of the medical service to which they were entitled and to which the council as a whole——

Deputy Dowling is reading that supplementary question.

How long did it take him to write that out?

I am aware that this bogus document was issued by the Labour Party.

Did the Minister write out the question for Deputy Dowling? He has a printed copy of the supplementaries.

On a point of order. Deputy Dowling read out that supplementary question.

The Minister put down the question for him and gave him the supplementary questions to ask.

He is reading it out——

And making a bad job of it, too.

Is the Minister further aware——

Deputy Dowling should have memorised it.

——that the document was signed by the Dunne squared —Paddy Dunne and Seán Dunne of the Labour Party?

Two square men.

As I pointed out, a summons to attend a meeting must be signed by the town clerk. I do not think either of these gentlemen is the town clerk.

We are the elected representatives of the people and we shall do our duty by the people.
