asked the Minister for Local Government (a) the date on which Galway County Council applied for sanction to erect traffic lights at Moneenageisha Cross and Cemetery Cross, Galway, (b) the reason for the delay in having these traffic lights erected and (c) the date on which it is expected that they will now be erected.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the great dissatisfaction in Galway city with the delay in implementing proper safety measures to protect the public from accidents at Moneenageisha crossroads and the new cemetery crossroads; the number of accidents that have taken place at each of these locations in the past six years; and how many were fatal.

As regards the provision of traffic light signals at the two crossroads, the background to this was given by me in reply to a question in the House on 5th December last. A proposal to accept a tender for the supply and installation of the light signals was submitted to my Department by Galway County Council in February last. It was necessary to clarify certain aspects of this proposal with the county council and I expect now that a decision will issue very shortly. Subject to approval to the accepted tender, it would be a matter for the county council to proceed with the provision of the signals.
Regarding accidents at the two intersections, I am informed that in the six years ended 31st December, 1968, the number of accidents reported to the Gardaí were 29 accidents at Moneenageisha Cross, one of which was fatal, and 41 accidents at New Cemetery Cross, none of which was fatal.
