Vol. 240 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Smelting Plant.

35.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the present position regarding the establishment of a smelting plant for ore mined in this country; and if special consideration will be given to the lower Shannon region as a site for such a plant.

As I informed the Deputy on the 14th November, 1968 the establishment of a smelter is a matter for private enterprise. A smelter company, a subsidiary of a mining group operating in this country, are examining the findings of a feasibility study on the question of establishing a smelting plant in this country. Pending their decision, I am not in a position tion to say where a smelter—if it is decided to establish one—might be erected.

Could the Minister give any indication as to when the feasibility study will be completed or could he indicate when a decision might be likely to be made?

I do not think I could. I do not expect it will be too long, but I have no positive information as to when a decision will be made.

No decision has been made as to the possible location.

To the best of my knowledge, it has not.

The Shannon Estuary will be borne in mind.

I am assured it is being borne in mind.
