Vol. 240 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tractor Safety Frames.

51.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether any proposals have been received in his Department for the manufacture of safety frames for tractors; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is no proposal before my Department for the manufacture of safety frames for tractors. I understand that the Industrial Development Authority are examining such a proposal but it would be premature for me to say more at this stage.

Is the Minister aware that at present safety frames purporting to be of Irish manufacture are in fact imported from Sweden and re-exported and that there is a likelihood that these are what will be supplied when the regulations are brought in to have safety frames on tractors—that is, if they are ever brought in?

Such regulations are under way. I am not aware, nor do I quite see the point of Swedish ones coming in and being re-exported, but as I have indicated there are proposals before the Industrial Development Authority for the manufacture of such safety frames.
