Vol. 240 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Guarding of Department Files.

27.

asked the Minister for Justice when special branch detectives were appointed to guard the files in his Department; the number at present guarding such files; and the cost to the State of this measure.

It would be contrary to the public interest to disclose the arrangements with regard to the security of public offices.

Is the Minister for Justice aware that those people were put there for political reasons to guard incriminating files regarding the abuse of public funds which, if made public, would bring down the Government?

I did not say there were any people there. I gave the reply that it would not be in the public interest to disclose if there are people there. I would advise Deputy L'Estrange not to worry—I am personally guarding his own file.

My file? The Minister can expose it any time he likes.

The moon is up.

The Minister for Education is the last person who should talk.

The moon is up.

What about divining water?

That is a separate question, surely?

Who watches the Special Branch men when they are watching the files?

Deputy L'Estrange.

Is the Minister aware that those people have only been there for the last eight or ten months?

Deputy L'Estrange's file is safe. I am watching it.

Never mind my file. Let the Minister watch his own.
