asked the Taoiseach the number of Irish speakers in the entire State (a) according to the 1946 census of population and (b) according to the most recent census.

The total number of persons returned as able to speak Irish at the 1946 Census of Population was 588,725 while the corresponding figure at the 1961 Census was 716,420. The 1961 Census of Population was the most recent at which a question was asked on ability to speak the Irish language.
