Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Robberies.

32.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the large number of armed and unarmed robberies in Dublin city recently; if he will make a statement on the matter; the number of gardaí stationed at present in Dublin; and if he will ensure that steps will be taken to alleviate the anxiety of the public.

Since 1st October last, the number of armed robberies in the Dublin Metropolitan Area has been four, and proceedings have been instituted in all four cases. In the preceding year, the figure was three.

As regards unarmed robberies, I am informed by the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, that while the full figures are not yet available there is no reason to think that there has been any serious deterioration, though some increase is to be expected as there is a general world-wide upward trend in crime.

The figure for unarmed robberies in the Dublin Metropolitan Area in the year ended 30th September last was 101. The detection rate was 78 per cent, which is an exceptionally high figure by comparison with similar urban areas in other countries.

The present strength of the Garda Síochána in the Dublin Metropolitan Area is 2,142.
