asked the Minister for Finance the total number of civil servants on 1st January, 1967, and 1st January, 1969; and the cost to the State at each of these dates.

49.

asked the Minister for Finance the total number of civil servants (a) established and (b) unestablished on 1st January, 1957, and 1st January, 1969.

The figures are taken from the Civil Service Census which relates to the first working day of the calendar year. The 1957 figures include temporary classes (mainly Scale-payment Sub-Postmasters, Branch Managers of Employment Exchanges and certain part-time employees) whose estimated total number is 2,700 at most and who are excluded from the Census from 1959 onwards. The 1969 figures are provisional.
