Vol. 240 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Amalgamation of Clare Schools.

60.

andSeán Ó Ceallaigh asked the Minister for Education what proposals are before his Department for the amalgamation of Inagh, Kilnamona and Gortbofarna national schools, County Clare.

It is proposed to amalgamate Kilnamona and Gortbofarna national schools with Inagh national school as soon as the necessary additional accommodation and improved facilities required have been provided at the latter school.

Transport services will be set up to convey the pupils from the schools at Kilnamona and Gortbofarna to the central school at Inagh.

Can the Minister say if the parents of the children concerned were consulted about the amalgamation and who recommended the amalgamation?

The parents were consulted and the manager of the school is in favour of the amalgamation.

My information is that the parents were never consulted about the matter, so they have informed us.

Certainly the local manager is completely in favour of the amalgamation and has recommended it to my Department and is organising it along with us.

In view of my information would the Minister ensure that the parents are consulted before any further steps are taken?

Certainly I shall do that. I acted and my Department acted on the basis that the parents were consulted by the reverend manager which is the usual presumption and we were sure that everybody was in favour of the proposed amalgamation, but I will certainly have that aspect of it investigated.

An bhfuil an tAire cinnte gur mhol an bhainisteoir go ndúnfaí an scoil atá i dtreis aige? An bhfuil an tAire cinnte gur mhol an bhainisteoir é?

Tá sin ceart.

An bhfuil tú cinnte dhe? Táim cinnte dhe nár cuireadh an rud i láthair na dtuistí riamh.

Maith go leor.

(Interruptions.)
