Vol. 240 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishery Harbours Survey.

6.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he has yet considered the reports of the fishery harbours survey team for the west coast; and, if so, with what results.

From my examination of the survey team's reports on some of the western counties and allowing for what is likely to emerge from the reports still to be received for the remainder of the west coast, I have decided to embark on a programme of fishery harbour improvement works for the entire area. The execution of all the works will extend over a period of about five years commencing in the current financial year and will involve an expenditure averaging some £200,000 per year.

In this financial year it has been decided, for a start, that improvement works will be put in hands at the following places, namely, Portaleen, Killala, Portshaulia (Clare Island), Cleggan, Moville, Emlaghmore, Roundstone and Meevagh. In addition urgent consideration is being given to improvement works at Burtonport, Kilcummin, Greencastle, Broadhaven, Inishturk, Cahirciveen, Magheraroarty and other minor places reported on by the survey team. It is intended, of course, to give full and careful consideration to the improvements required in the remaining parts of the west coast when I receive the survey team's report on those areas—this with a view to their being included in the above-mentioned five year programme.

Is it not clear that this is an election gimmick? Does the Minister think he will fool anyone?

Could I ask Deputy O'Hara this: does he want the commitment in respect of Killala withdrawn here and now?

No, but——

One hundred thousand people have been driven out of the west in the last ten years.

Deputy O'Hara does not know the first thing about it.
