Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Revision of Dublin City Maps.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that the latest revision of maps of Dublin city on a scale larger than 2" to the mile is now over 30 years out of date; whether he is aware that the 2" scale is so small that many streets cannot be identified or are identified only by numbers on the map so that their names can be found only by a study of the entire index; and what steps he is taking to provide the Ordnance Survey with sufficient resources to enable them to prepare and publish up-to-date, large-scale maps of Dublin.

A map of Dublin city was published by the Ordnance Survey in 1948, 1958 and 1962 at a scale of about 2½" to one mile and as recently as 20th June, 1969, at a scale of 3½" (approximately) to one mile; it is not possible to show all street names on maps of this order which are designed for popular use; in view of my reply to the first parts of the question the third part does not arise but I may add that a series of maps of the city is being prepared by the Ordnance Survey at the ultra large scale of 1: 1000 (approximately 63 inches to one mile).
