Vol. 241 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing and Water Inspectors.

32.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of inspectors of his Department who are engaged in housing inspection and water and sewage inspection for grant purposes; and if he is satisfied, in view of the long delays relating to such inspections, that there is a sufficient number of inspectors employed on this work.

The number at present employed is 66.

Due to the varying volume of housing grant applications in the different inspection areas delays tend to occur in some areas from time to time. This situation is dealt with specially as need arises. The overall position is satisfactory.

As regards group water supply schemes, four additional inspectors are required and a competition to recruit the extra men is being arranged.

Would the Minister consider that a delay of several months before a completed job is examined would be reasonable, in view of the fact that in most cases small contractors doing this work are awaiting money until the job is completed?

I do not think that would be reasonable or usual. In a case where there is a delay like that, arrangements will be made to make sure that the delay is shortened.

Is the Minister aware that the position in County Meath at present is that there are over 120 applications awaiting inspections?

I am not aware that there is a long delay at present.

There are over 120 applications awaiting inspection. In view of the fact that one man is apparently trying to do the whole job, would the Minister have a look at the position and see whether anything could be done about it?

I will see what can be done.
