Vol. 241 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Damage to Posters.

52.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that complaints have been lodged with the Garda in Waterford city about malicious damage done to specially commissioned Fine Gael posters during the recent general election campaign; and, if so, what steps have been taken to bring the perpetrators of these acts before the courts.

I have been informed that a complaint was made to the Garda in Waterford about one incident, namely, the tearing down of four election posters from the outside of a building that is easily accessible from the public street.

In the absence of positive evidence, proceedings cannot be instituted.

I am not quite satisfied with the answer. Would the Minister think it worth while that, in future we should employ a private firm of security guards to protect our property?

Yes, do that.

If the Deputy or his party would provide security against the tearing down of Fianna Fáil posters in the town of Ballinrobe in my constituency, I should be happy to hear it. At all events, we gave them a fool's pardon, knowing the end result.
