Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Training Centre.

240.

asked the Minister for Labour what steps An Chomhairle Oiliúna have taken towards setting up a training centre in Cork.

Mr. Brennan

The resources of An Chomhairle Oiliúna for capital expenditure on training centres are committed up to 1971. I am informed by An Chomhairle that full consideration will be given to the claims of Cork in their planning for any additional training centres which may be necessary after 1971.

Three centres have been established at Galway, Limerick and Waterford. Cork should not be ignored. Another centre is due to be opened in Dublin. Is there any particular reason why Cork is being ignored in this way?

I did not think Cork would be ignored.

Could the Minister advance the date from 1971?

There are other areas in the country for consideration also. We have Waterford, Shannon and Galway. We are placing them geographically.

Donegal should come next.

There are many claims for these centres. The centres only cater for their local areas.

We cannot discuss this question all night.

We are asking for special consideration.

I can assure the Deputy that Cork will have a high place on the priority list.

Would the Minister not agree that Cork has a very low place on the list?

It has a high place in my estimation.

It had not a high place in the estimation of ANCO when they put it fifth on the list.

Other places had to be developed first. There was an immediate demand in other places for people who were being trained. The potential was there and the training was a necessary prerequisite to the industrial development of Waterford, Shannon and Galway.

When ANCO are short of funds will the Minister make further funds available? A previous Minister has said that £100,000 was only a detail.

That was in a different context.
